Hey New Zealand folk ... The misses and I are thinking of heading over to New Zealand hopefully later in the year and was hoping u guys could give us some tips of where to go and when ?
I really want to get in a week of skiing in there somewhere too ...

If we were to plan a 2 - 4 week trip to see the sights and hit the mountains where would we be best to stay (north island, south island) I really have no idea about NZ ?

Can u ski most the year in NZ ?

    Cheers guys ...

You can ski from about july to about october most years, for more detail on that you would really want to check out some of the ski fields websites though.

I guess a lot of it depends on what you want to see exactly. There are lots of things in Auckland like Kelly Tarltons, the Museum, Rainbows End, and the Sky Tower, but if you're more interested in scenery, then the South Island is a much better bet. There is skiing in the North Island too though, around Mt Ruapehu.

As Brad says, you've missed the ski season this year.

I'm from Christchurch (South Island) so I'm completely biased, but you should definitely check out the South Island. 2-4 weeks is enough to a really good tour from top to bottom. Then come back and do the North on a second trip.

My other half works for ANZCRO who specialise in travel to NZ so have a look on their website (www.anzcro.com.au) or grab one of their brochures from your local travel agent.

    cheers

I'm half Kiwi, and, having visited my rellies on the North Island 19 times and gone to the South Island in November '06, as far as scenery goes, you can't beat the South. With 2-4 weeks, though, I reckon you could easily do both.

I'm probably going back for a trip this coming Winter to the South and will definitely make sure I go back to Hanmer Springs (there is a place there with a spa that overlooks the countryside that is just spectacular), Aoraki Village and Milford Sound. However, whatever you do, make sure you plan to spend a decent amount of time in Queenstown. It is just remarkable (pardon the pun).

Thanx guys ... had a good read last nite ... I can gather one thing from my research so far ... u guys have a lot of Glow Worms ?? hahaaha
Definately got to fit in the Water Rafting and Jet boating and giant Swing. Not too keen on the bungy's.
Queenstown sounds good. I don't want to do Contiki, but I checked out the itinery for a guide ... Would it be worth hiring a car in the south island and driving to do the scenery ?

Yes, definitely get a car - bus tours suck :)

If you're going for 4 weeks you could even try and buy a cheap one hehehe

Just buy a vr-4 on trademe for $4-5k, even if it is a bad one it will last you for 4 weeks, then on your way out you can just walk up to a car dealer and sell them the car, you won't lose much money and at least you've had a decent car to drive.

Go to Queenstown for sure, it is awesome there, and at least do the bungee up the chair lift just out of town, it is awesome fun and easy to do, but i loved the Nevis :p.

In 4 weeks you should get a good look around the south island, and still have time for a week ski IMO. It is so cheap to fly over there, go do the norht island another time
