Will my Brembos need to be re-bored?

Hi all,

Just sent my brembo calipers off to be sandblasted in preparation for a new paint job, but the guy doing it (who is very knowledgable) is a little concerned they may need to be re-bored, as they have been sitting around for an unknown period of time, something to do with build-up of water in the brake fluid. Would this affect the brembos or is he just being over-cautious?

Sounds plausible, have you inspected the piston bores to see if they are ok?

Nope, didn't think to. Should I just take them to a brake specialist and get them to sus them out?

I highly doubt they would have started corroding. It is very simple to remove brake caliper pistons. Basically, put a rag in between the pistons and where they will shoot out too. Remove the bleeder screw and pump compressed air into the bleeder screw hole. The compressed air will force the pistons to come out. Once they are out, clean up as much as you can inside the bores and check for scoring and/or pitting from corrosion.
Re-fitting needs to be done carefully. You don't want to tear the seal, because it will obviously cause a leak.

Well I've never sone it before, and they're a bit to expensive and important to learn on I thinks. Brake shop it is...

If they have been sitting with water there for sometime then there could be quite a bit of rust on the inside of the bore. To confirm your last post, I'd be taking them to a specialist!

I'd be keen to know when you do get them apart. How long exactly they were sitting around and was it water or brakefluid?

They are super simple machines and you would have to be super special to damage the seals putting them back together unless you did it with a hammer.

However, a brake specialist can't hurt. Good luck!

Mate, I don't think they will need doing. I certainly wasn't going to do them when I got around to fitting them but I guess it does add to your own sense of security
