So i've got some vacation work coming up over this summer break and i leave in three weeks for the Cadia Valley site in NSW, just wondering if anyone else works away on minesites and if so what kind of stuff should i take with me. I want to know because its not FIFO, im just there for 12 weeks so no chance to get stuff ive forgotten/have discovered would be useful.

Being my first experience working away i'm not sure what sort of stuff would be worth taking so any info would be much appreciated (y).

Seems to me that if your going to be away for 3 months your gonna need all the usual stuff i.e. socks jocks etc plus at least a weeks supply of personal hygene items (there are shops about I guess), then I'd consider keeping your self entertained, so books, DVD's, mobile phones, mobile games, pen, paper. Take a laptop, if you've got one. That's about all I can think of right now. Oh yeah, when your packing don't forget to consider the temperatures at your destination.

It says it's in the Orange area of NSW. In which case, take LOTS of stuff to keep you entertained.

Oh, & spare change of pants. When it happens, you'll know why.

I don't know the site but I have done this kind of work a fair bit.

I find normally I'm so shagged that I don't need much apart from the basic survival things like enough clothes/underwear/toiletries.

I never go on one without a good book and my laptop. If I was more prepared I would load my laptop up with a bunch of stuff I wanted to watch. Honestly though, I rarely get round to watching much... You'll be working 12hr shifts in searing heat, your going to be buggered every night.. and probs having beers at the camp pub as well... You will loose weeks pretty quickly if you can handle the lifestyle :)

Find out if they issue you a water cooler. If they don't take one of those 4L esky type things with you. You wont regret it. When it's hot you can polish 8L in a day easy, and it will stop you getting heat stroke etc.

So you don't get lonely?

Good idea that one, I always have one in the car just incase.. Sometimes the chicks my car pulls constantly aren't really of that high quality..

My dad is always going to minesites, he puts movies and stuff on his laptop just in case.. But like already mentioned, usually he is working such ridiculous hours that he doesn't have time to..
Water is always an important factor, as well as sun protection in case you have to be outside for long periods of time..
Hygiene stuff, I'm sure they have things but you never know!
Books? But like also mentioned may not have the energy, patience or time. But always good!
Is there a town or anything near by? Socialising is always a good thing, my dad tells me about the people he meets onsite and in the food/drinks area keeping up a social thing with just chatting to people helps morale

As the others mentioned, make sure you have a hard-drive with lots & lots of (backed-up) movies. As Hugh said, after work you usually go for dinner, have a shower, a beer or 2 and thats it. I've stayed in minesite camps for a bit more than a year all up now and never really got bored... apart from your RDO day every 2 weeks you won't have much spare time to fill!

Esky, water cooler etc should be all supplied, as well as TV's, Ice rooms (water supply) and the 4 different camps I've been in all had Foxtel as well... but NSW might be different hehe.

Couldn't you find anything in our beautiful north west?!

Nope, couldnt get anything here. Seeing as i have no experience im grateful for the opportunity no matter where it is tbh. Ive been told im working 5 days on 2 off while im there so will definately take some movies on a hard drive for the weekends if i dont end up working them. And in regards to nearby towns, im staying in the nearby town in shared accomodation from what i gather so hopefully there will be something to do there.
