Joined up a little while ago as I was waiting for a Galant to pop up, and wanted to know more. My other (running and rego'd) car is a '13 club cab Triton.

Long story short, I picked up a 99 type V Manual this Sunday gone, and I'm 95% sure it was floating around here, someone knows the car for sure, it has a few tell tale mods. I'll list them below.
  • Meek front pipe & high flow cat
  • Fujitsubo Legalis Super R catback AM intercooler
  • Cusco aluminium intake piping
  • 3-port boost solenoid
  • 3sx fuel loop (255lph fuel pump?)
  • Denso COP kit
  • NPC Heavy duty clutch & solid clutch line
  • Battery to boot
  • Selby swaybars (?)
  • Reinforced rear swaybar mounts (?)
  • Projector retrofit headlights
  • Short shifter, Rigid shifter bushes and ralliart shift knob
  • Ralliart engine mounts
  • ISC coilovers
  • Evo 7 wheels
  • Hi-vis cluster swap
  • HKS boost gauge
  • TME tune, it's running 1.2bar peak
  • BOV delete
  • Custom peeling factory mitsi clear coat on the roof and bonnet
The cluster reads 333xxx, but the old owner said actual reading is 140xxx lower. It's optioned with the recaros and the momo steering wheel, as well as the moonroof. The gumtree ad listed Superpro rear bushes, but everything looks pretty stock under there, I didn't think superpro made anything at all for EC5's.

So far, I've ditched two badly scollped Federal 595's for a couple of Kumho PS71 (So much better you have no idea) and did a wheel alignment. I've also ditched the reverse camera, faulty headunit, and installed amps actually up to the task of powering the speakers, also cleaned up the wiring a bit. Sadly the left front speaker sounds like it has a blown cone, so, that sucks.

I've found a few issues, some aesthetic some mechanical.
  • Front turbo dump is half crushed, I'll need to get a new turbo dump to cat.
  • There's way too much camber (pretty much 3 degree all round (why aren't these adjustable?)
  • Caster split is also wrong way around, car pulls left a bit, kinda annoying.
  • The rear valve cover is leaking like a sieve. (standard V6)
  • The RHR wheel bearing I think is noisy, I had it running on the hoist, and I could hear something there, but I can't actually feel anything wrong in the bearing, feels smooth. Driving it sounds like a bearing, though could be brakes, could also be tyres. (Don't buy Federals, pls)
  • Power steer is pretty noisy, might give it a flush and see if it comes better
  • There's a noisy lifter or two, sometimes, so, hopefully they'll be good for a while
  • Rear diff whines. Sounds like it's time for an LSD
  • LHF outer CV boot is torn
  • HVAC leaks water all over the passenger floor, a royal pain it the ass
  • There's also no center brake light?
  • All the rotors are pretty worn
  • The balljoints on the rear toe arms are worn, they have a couple of mm of play.
Aesthetically, I need some evo 7 wheel caps, some badges, the paint repaired, the wheels are a crappy (imo) shade of black, the high beams need to be changed to some 6000k-ish bulbs, and need some LED in the parkers and reverse. Also the front bar has seen better days. Also, the intercooler needs more black power coat, thinking of powder coating the wheels in a gun metal gray too. A bunch of little things that bug me too.

As for plans, I want to get it sound first, but I'm thinking about evo brakes, some braided lines to start with, after I fix the front speakers. Then maybe one of TME highflow turbo jobs and a tune. It goes pretty good now, but extra straight line speed never goes astray.

Anyway, g'day, hope to see some of you around, and does anyone know this car? (I don't have any great pics yet, I haven't even washed it lol)

I live out towards Jimboomba, but I work in Garden City, so I'm between both.

I've seen a couple of white Legs, a black leg, and a maroon Galant locally.

Welcome to the club. We are going to a meet with some 6g vr4s over at kangaroo point tomorrow night if you're interested.

As for the crushed dump pipe, that's really strange considering the front dump pipe is cast iron, you sure you don't mean the front pipes?

Nah, dump off the front turbo. I mean, maybe they're called front pipes here on these?
It hangs down pretty low, I think someone collected a curb or two. I'd grab a pic but the car is pretty low, I didn't see it till I had it up on a hoist.

And I might scurry on over. Is there an event on Facebook?

Yep front pipes, the Y-piece, always getting hit, doesnt connect directly to the turbo so its not a dump pipe.

Ah yeah, okay. I thought they came straight of the turbos, seeing they're right there, they looked like it, I didn't look super hard though.
Maybe when I get the pipes redone, I'll get them straight from the turbos, see if my guy can tuck them up a little higher at all. I'll probably make a bash guard for it from so 4-6mm plate.

If yours still has the original flexible coupling in the exhaust, make sure your guard covers that too ... wonder why I suggest that?! My housemate loves all the roads with judder bars and likes borrowing my blue Leggie ....... Cost a bit to have that coupling replaced.

Wouldn't get them straight to the turbos, makes removing the exhaust to work on the car (transfer case, gearbox, sway bars etc) much much harder, just get some 2.5" dump pipes made.

Welcome. Was a slightly different beast when I owned it. Hopefully you return it to its former glory. Rear swaybar mounts are superpro. Well, was when it had the big bars in it

I figured you'd know it naughtika, it has your lights and COP kit.

Was probably on full boost I take it Tristo? What were you in?

Ah, there we have it. Rear sway bar mounts make sense as they're an overall standard kinda part. Do you know what the reinforced bit was about?

I wish the front bar looked anything like that pic, haha, I'm going to have to buy a plastic welding/vulcanising kit to fix it. Most of the mounts are broken and there's a heap of cracks. I'm pretty sure it's held on with zip ties.

Makes sense pretzil. I'll see what I can get done on that side.

Cheers Mookers and everyone else. This place has given me a great deal of info already, I mean, I can even track this cars history :p

Does anyone have the link or pic about spacing the rear upper arms out to fix/reduce rear camber? Did a couple of searches and found it mentioned.

Lindsey, that reinforcement was for the mount as they are thin and old. Thicker swaybar causes this to snap. experiences from owners who had upgraded theirs

So, long story short, I may have stuffed up 2 weeks into ownership.

Shannons wrote the car off and paid me out, but due to wonderful QLD regs, and that the car is over 15 years old, it doesn't go on WOVR, and I'm able to repair it, so I bought it back. I'll have it in my chosen body shop to have the chassis straitened, and a straight rad support welded back on the front, hopefully in the middle of May.

The list of damages:
  • Upper and lower frame rails bent/damaged
  • Rad support looked like wet noodles
  • Bonnet crushed
  • Bonnet latch, well, it didn't unlatch anymore.
  • RH guard munted
  • RH indicator lens vanished
  • All heat exchangers damaged (except for the intercooler, go figure)
  • RH headlight is a pile of scrap on the ground
  • Both air bags deployed, smashing my windscreen, ruining my dash, and melting the inside of my Momo wheel
  • The hit pushed the charge pipes back, cracking my intake manifold and front valve cover, where they were bolted down
  • Dent in front charge pipe
  • RH engine mount, the part that bolts to the engine copped a solid crack though it.
  • Thermo fans broke.
So far, I've acquired, and done:
  • Valve cover, intake manifold, and broken part of engine mount
  • Removed damaged core support
  • Unplugged harness, and removed all piping exhaust, and intake mainfolds
  • Today I pulled the driveshaft out, and yanked the CV's. Engine is ready to drop out now.
Still after a shitload of parts, but I've got some leads now, so, it'll be back, better then ever (almost)
With the pay out I got, I should be able to fix it within budget. I'll even have enough left over to fix the other issues the car had. I'll need to replace all the lower suspension arms, and the top ones balljoints have seen better days. I'll also replace the dumps, and front pipes, and see if I can sort something out with the kinda lame factory turbo piping.

Onwards!

PS: Should I move this to the "members rides" area?
