Constant random engine miss.

This issue has been going on for some time and I need it fixed as it happens randomly and in some cases at the worst time.

My car seems to miss or have a fuel cut at the most random of times but it does stay consistently not once in a blue moon. The examples are as:
While the car has sat idling during warm up for a short while it will cut as to stall or the engine has been turned off but just for a moment then continues running like nothing has happened no spluttering just total nothing then running again.
Another is while cruising the cut happens again just for a split second no engine/exhaust noise then fires back up and runs like nothing happened no splutter.
And this one while under load the cut can happen 1-2 times but once it goes back to normal it will actually boost and take off very sprightly and be very responsive to pedal position and control with again no spluttering.
Best example here was I put my foot down 4th gear 60ks boosted got to 80ks then cut then boosted to 90ks cut then boosted too 110ks fast.
I have also noticed that the car seems sluggish and not very spirited even though it's boosting it doesn't seem to move very quick and a tone of black smoke will pour out of the back while under load but from time to time it will move very quickly under load and no smoke will billow out from the back. I'm not sure if this is part of the problem or my paranoia.

I earlier had a issue where the car would bunny hop as if I had dropped the clutch at low revs but after changing the plugs and replacing a coil pack this seemed to vanish.
A similar issue happened where the car would respond to pedal control by just been on or off you would hop if not enough revs were used ( normally <1500 to roll off but would need >2000 ) and you could only drop the clutch no easing it out otherwise you'd stall or hop and you had to floor it or it would stall. This was fixed by Christian by changing the TPS to 13.7% instead of the usual 13.33% Christian made a note that the ECU was still controlling the Idle even with the change of position so would go back to normal Idle range but stopped this issue.

Areas here that had some work done the Butterfly shutter seals and grommets where replace in the intake. The Idle stepper controller was also replaced. Injector seals have been replaced.
The fuel pump is the normal replacement we all do I got mine from Chocco some time ago as he used to work at the manufacturers. The fuel filter gets replaced once every 6 months ( I travel a lot in this car usually 100ks a day )
I mention these other issues and their resolve as I don't know if they might be a part of this problem in some way.

As it sits I think I have either some fueling issue just not enough been sent to the motor or to much maybe, some issue with the Idle control or throttle positioning or are the waste gates not activating as they should causing the erratic boost and power output.
Any help here would be hugely appreciated.

EvoScan is your friend. Sounds like the MAF sensor is having a hissy fit but I'd scope it with EvoScan.

I unfortunately don't have easy access to Evoscan :( don't own a lap top, and the local mechanics scan tools only pick up basic error codes and don't have the full ecu list for this type of car.
I wouldn't have thought the MAF would cause these issues I've had it unplugged before and the car just runs rough and doesn't cut the way it is.

Two things can go wrong: fuel or fire. MAF affects both. Coils and IFS and plug leads and plugs affect fire.

I'll give this a closer look then when the chance for a scan come up.

it sounds like it's either the maf having a fit, or an ignition problem. given that tps change did something I'd lean toward maf initially. if you're sure that the plugs leads and packs are ok I'd be looking at ifs. bypassing it for a while and seeing how that goes is a free thing to try.

Hey Borg, I';m having a similar issue. Just wondering if you got this sorted in the end and what the problem was?

I'd be surprised if he was still on the forum. Best to hit up @TME_Steve as he's the lone ranger workshop specialising in VR4s still.

Sorry for the long overdue response, I've still got the Borg and drive it daily I just got busy and forgot all about this thread. Yes it was the MAF the entire time I replaced the MAF and it cleared up until recently now it's acting up like the MAF isn't connected but wiggling the wires it does come good.
