Boys and girls,

Recently I decided to connect my Ipod (and phone) to my jap Pioneer stereo via it's RCA leads. On doing so I found that I have 2 sets of RCA leads: 1 for the front speakers and 1 for the back speakers/sub.

I connected it to the front speakers, turned on "Auxillary" on the stereo and it works, but with very poor sound and volume that is only controlled by the Ipod (read: not very loud).

I have a manual but can't read Japanese so can anyone enlighten me as to what I need to do to get it working properly?

Cheers,
Dan

The internal amplifier on the ipod is crap...seriously crap.

Purchase one of these:
http://www.tryandbyte.com.au/cgi-bin/page.pl?page=2957&title=Sendstation%20PocketDock%20Line%20Out%20Mini%20USB&current=2833

It takes the line out signal from the ipod, completely bypassing the ipod's internal amplifier.
Plug that into your amp if you have one and the sound quality will be heaps better. I am assuming here that you have actually ripped you music on the ipod at a sensible bit rate... 320kbps preferably.

If you don't have an amp, the internal amp in the Pioneer head unit may not be sufficient. It is most likely 18Wrms at best. I know Dad's JVC head unit wasn't. In which case you need to buy/make a little headphone amp kit or purchase a small 2 channel amplifier.

Cheers
Pete

I've gone about solving this problem a little differently as I wanted charging abilities also.
Specifically the Eclipse iPC-106 provides some of these capabilities for my head unit but I also wanted to connect the video output from the Ipod photo/video to the system as well.

In doing so I came across some handy parts along the way that may be of interest to others.

1/ (SPI) iPod dock connector split into two female iPod dock connectors.

2/ Female 30-pin to 1/8" Stereo Audio and USB

3/ Apple Composite AV Cable

I just bought a head unit with USB iPod connectivity :p probably the simplest option to save you relying on the awful sound that comes direct from an iPod

i have my ipod connected via av leads and it sounds perfectly fine, i can adjust the volume on the ipod or the head unit.... have you checked to see if your ipods sound is all the way up (not normal volume control, this is in setting and it governs the audio volume output)

you havnt said what the outcome is with your phone playing either......that would be useful to determine if its definitely the head unit or ipod

i bought two of these which are good little docks at a great price with great quality also
