Potentially. What's it actually doing?

Can't shift into 3rd, pops out of gear when turning (like a round about) 4th gear grinds on the downshift unless i let the revs drop around 1k

Get it rebuilt with evo internals. Could be lucky and it's just the shift
Fork
But yeah Steve I read the post and I was seriously thinking it could have been the same fault as marks.

Apart from ratio changing there is no difference between vr4 internals and evo. Sounds like a shift fork/detent/synchro problem, common as on evos and of all the vr4 boxes we've pulled apart we've replaced a lot of shift forks so I'm not surprised.

i can't afford the downtime to have it repaired, so just getting a low k's gearbox instead.

I'll open my stuffed one later on and see how bad it is and fix/upgrade internals.

Also why change to evo ratio's i've read everywhere evo guy prefer the legnum/galant ratio's.

If you're near us and it only needs parts we have in stock, we'd have it fixed in under a day once we had the box in our hands. Problem is if it's not parts we have in stock you're stuffed for a few weeks.

Evo 1st 2nd and 5th would usually be considered better (all taller)

Gather these aren't stocked? Be keen to drop a set in myself during the rebuild...

Now that seems like a nice idea. A taller 5th gear alone would be nice for freeway cruising,

I wouldn't touch 5th, you'll find the further you move it away from peak torque, the engine will need to work harder.
Yes it'll be spinning slower, however anytime you are not on flat ground you'll use more throttle % and fuel.

I can give 2 real world examples. 2 cars, one a turbo skyline the other 6 liter V8. Skyline put a taller diff ratio in to lower the overall RPM for highway cruising, V8 put in a shorter diff for towing.
Skyline fuel economy got worse, then V8 with shorter gearing economy improved.

Why, because the Skyline moved away from peak torque, the V8 moved closer toward it. Nothing else on the cars were changed.

Food for thought...

Personally only interested in the lower gears myself but getting off the OPs topic now aren't we ;-)
Not really, he lost 3rd but may have considered changing ratios seeing it was brought up early in the post.
I considered my post quite relevant
