Anyone had any experience with the rear diff giving up?? I Went for a drive to the sunny coast last night to see the parents. On the way home, just driving along normally heard a huge bang it felt like i had just hit a brick wall. After checking everything found a puddle of oil under the back diff. I cant drive it at all, its clunking and making BAD noises.
So my car is stuck in maroochydore on the side of the road and i live in brissy :banghead:

Also any imput on a good machanic on the sunny coast and somewhere to get a new diff would be a great help thanks.

my pinion gear lost a few teeth, and nothing else was damaged, luckily,
so was DIY fix for me,

sounds like your had blown in a big way, and possibly cracked the casing, or a best taken out a seal or 2,

www.kempys.co.nz but you would be lucky to hav any change from $1000

the Evo 8 and 9 have super-ayc,

The usual suspects in cvr4 now have one for sale, pm mpau009 or subarueta. It is out of a working car and looks ok from the outside.

the car was bought as stolen and recovered, (well its a bit more complicated than that, but i wont get into that... it wasnt actually stolen)

so its been stripped to a bare shell now, and parts are up for sale

ohhh my god,
MY rear diff went aswell, I live in brisbane also (son of a bitch). my 97 pre-facelift manual legnum is in my new farm apartments car space with no roof and the whether here has me putting a mattress over it and covering it with a car cover so theres no hail damage (which is neva a good look). my older brother stole the plates to put on his certified 12.6, first 60 foot wheel spin s13 cuase hes trying to sell it, so i hav'nt even got plates on it.

and I cant find a crankshaft for my cordia 4g63 rebuild.

anyways kiddyvr4 what im trying to say is I feel your pain

ohh and can anybody tell me if the crown and pinon for the evo7 is exactly the sme ratio as the legnums manual version cuase; if it is'nt, the rear wheels will be traveling at 60 kmph and the fronts at 50 you could imagine the results

There is a difference in ratio but it is very slight. VR-4's and EVO 4's are 3.323 (53/16) and EVO 5-9 are 3.307 (43/13)

The interesting thing is that the EVO 4,5,6 all used the same transfer case, even with the different ratios, so I would therefore imagine that the slight ratio difference isn't an issue at all. I also know of a few members with EVO 8/9 Super AYC diff's which are also 43/13 and they haven't had any issues either.

you just made my day if people have done it Im all for it, Ill try this. The diff specialist I went to said " if you draw a chalk line on your tyres and free spin them and they pretty well match up you'll be sweet; but if they don't you'll know within 5 meters of driving that it was a no go. In saying that Im willing to try anything so thanks for the info bradc cheers

If you try and do that up in the air on a VR-4 it won't work anyway as the AYC gets all confused and tries to stop the wheels individually at the back!

Anyway, as I said, it is fine to swap them, no big issues at all.

or you can change to NON-AYC,theyr the same ratio and are stronger, but alot of people praise ayc, what ever happend to good suspension and driving skill,we are controlled by a pump and a computer...,anyhow,i have a few non ayc diffs,iv put one in my project leggy, bolts straight up,but need the non ayc subframe and shaftes tho
