I'm in Japan right now myself, and the news has not stopped, 24 hours a day of coverage. Earthquakes are still going, at midnight Saturday. (by the way, tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, so to get a tsunami there must be a quake first). I myself was in the subway at the first quake and got out before things got worse. I did have to walk home across the city of Tokyo, one side to the other. There are thousands and thousands of people missing, over a thousand dead, bushfires, and now chance that a damaged power station may meltdown and leak radiation.

The Australian embassy has been handing out water and fruit. I wish I could do more to help, but I'm going back to Australia tonight and with power blackouts even in Tokyo as they shut down four reactors, I think Australia is a good place to go.

I reckon country leaders near Japan should get iin touch, coordinate evacuation areas.. so that if and when people need to really evacuate Japan, it'll be easier and quicker..

and the airport at Sendai, they should clear out the runways.. so that planes can come in and out when needed..

A girl I went to school with volunteered in the Haitian cleanup effort and has talked about doing the same in Japan. I'm wondering if it'd be something I could do too...

I think one of my other clubs West Coast Cruisers is organising a charity cruise for Japan.

I would encourage all states to do the same a JDM cruise for Japan is a great way to help out from here in Aus IMO.

It is a very horrible thing to happen, especially in the wake of New Zealand as well. The extent of it is incredible, never could I have imagined something of this extent!

I was told that Japan has earth quakes all the time? I wonder what set this one off so badly :(

Also I keep seeing "2012" stuff popping up on Facebook constantly, it's really tiresome.

Horrible to see all this. i think the toll will be so much higher, the predictions just keep climbing by the hour. And to happen in Japan where the economy has been on the brink of collapse for so long, this could just tip it over. The consequences of this disaster will be felt long after the clean up and funerals

Im getting pretty frustrated by the sensationalist headlines of 'nuclear explosions' and 'pending nuclear catastrophe' detracting from the real issues that should be reported on - finding survivors, how the relief operation is going, how the government is going co-ordinating the emergency services' response etc. There is cause for concern but its not as bigger issue as the medias making it up to be.

Sadly, that side of it doesn't make for good sales or ratings....

They're saying the whole plate has shifted 2.4 metres as a result of the quake. That's a big shunt..

The nuclear stuff has the potential to make the situation exponentially worse though. That's why it is being discussed. Right now it seems like that is what is posing the greatest immediate danger.

Hopefully in the weeks and months ahead, after the immediate aftermath has been dealt with, attention turns to the danger of nuclear energy and why we should never go down that path. But that's a debate for later on.

reactor three was a MOX reactor
uranium oxide+ Plu4 [plutonimum oxide]
this will become bigger than three mile island and chenopbyle combined
google MOX reactor// and the spent fuel rods where kept in the same buildings that blew up
some say in the roof / look what happened to that
some say 60000 thousand spent fuel rods are stored there
