Found this in the engine bay. What is it?

Anybody know what this is and what it does? When i shake it, it sounds like there are beads in there.

That is a charcoal canister which I belived it is part of the ECS (emission control system) and you cannot remove this too as it will breach the ADR compliance. AFAIK, every single car in OZ has them.

Charcoal Cannister is part of thye Emission Control System. Cannot be removed from the vehicle. If so, will breach ADR's.

Auto Trans fluid recommended is the SPIII I believe.

but seriously.. how is charcoal created/generated from our car?! I thought our engines are one of the better performing engines when it comes ot emission? (well NA based anyway )

The amorphous carbon is not generated by the car, it is used to filter unburnt fuel vapours. It works effectively due to the high surface area.

its used to vent the pressure built up inside the fuel tank, it passes through the carbon cannister, into the plenum.

Stupid question time: Would bypassing the charcoal canister screw up A/F ratios? Or is the amount of air passing through it insignificant?

MPau removed it when doing his TD05 setup and found that the car stank terribly of petrol until he put it back in.
