Starter motor problems

So i had to get the leggy towed the other day due to it not wanting to cooperate with the whole starting thing..
Got it home and i could hear the starter spinning but not engaging.
Took it today.. pulled it apart and it was clagged up with carbon.. gave it a good clean.. put it all back together and tested it.. it engaged and span off a battery..

Popped it back in the car and it did the same thing...
Even bridged the 2 points on the solonoid.. span but didnt engage properly..
Anyone had these issues before?

Likely worn through a couple of fins in the starter, especially if carboned up. Did you pull the motor apart and have a look at the brushes?

Yeah i have done some more looking.. one fin is cracked and the bushes are cactus new starter incoming.. :/

haha and a couple of weeks later, my starter has finally gone too... time for an overhaul.

our starter motor is part number MD342382 and internals are common with many other mitsu starters.

I used the stator and brushes from a 2.6 magna starter. Not sure of the model though.

Otherwise i wouldnt have been on the dyno with steve yesterday

Damn if it was stopping the dyno I would have borrowed somone else's for the hour. Lol
