Overview of EvoScan

EvoScan is commercial software which can - when coupled with an appropriate OpenPort or FTDI VAGCOM cable, can collect Trouble Codes from your ECU and other modules such as ABS and AYC.

Difference between EvoScan and ECUFlash

EvoScan is a diagnostics and logging tool, whereas ECUFlash is designed specifically to re-flash/tune your ECU. ECUFlash is owned by Tactrix who also produce and sell the OpenPort 2.0.

What's needed?

To use EvoScan for diagnostics and logging of your ECU, you will need the software and either an OpenPort 1.3 or 2.0 cable, or FTDI based VAGCOM cable. Depending on your needs, the following table provides guidance on the products you need to purchase:

Goal Products to buy Notes
Diagnostic logging only EvoScan

OpenPort 1.3D

OpenPort 1.3D is only capable of logging, but is the cheapest cable for this purpose.

You can also buy the cable with EvoScan bundled, which saves $5 off the price of buying them separately.

Diagnostic logging while you drive and saved to an SD card EvoScan

OpenPort 2.0

The OpenPort 2.0 is also available directly from Tactrix, who is the designer and manufacturer.

If purchasing from EvoScan, you can also buy the OpenPort 2.0 with EvoScan bundled, which saves $5 off the price of buying them separately.

ECUFlash

ECUFlash is free but it is a complex tool to use and you must educate yourself on its usage.

Incorrect use of ECUFlash can brick your ECU. You have been warned.

Is OpenPort 2.0 always better than an OpenPort 1.3?

The OpenPort 2.0 can be used in place of an OpenPort 1.3D. The OpenPort 2.0 is a much more capable tool and we recommend spending the extra coin if you can, but if you don't need it, stick with the OpenPort 1.3D.
