climate control temperature dial

The temperature dial on my climate control unit has been misbehaving a bit... it seems to get "confused" as to which way I'm turning the dial, and therefore it takes AGES to raise or lower the set point, since it faffs around up and down randomly no matter which way I turn it.

I have solved this problem, somewhat, by using some Electrical Clean and Lube (10 bucks at Jaycar) and spraying it as well I could down the dial's shaft with the knob removed. But it's not completely fixed - it still goes the wrong way about 10 percent of the time. More spray I suppose!

Just posting this in case anyone else has the same problem, or if there are better solutions.

If you have a woodgrain dash, Keith (khk) is selling a full carbon dash with aircon control unit. It'll let you sort your problem out, and get rid of the ugly wood

I do have a woodgrain dash, but it's hidden under a few layers of black and sparkly purple paint (see my members rides thread)

I can live with the dodgy dial, as long the spray keeps it under control. BTW the spray works a treat on any noisy electrical contacts, like volume controls, EQ sliders, etc.

Dereck I've seen that exact problem before, and it's not an easy one to fix unfortunately - at least, not for anyone that's not an electronics expert.

You basically have two options - try to find an electronics specialist who is willing to take a look, or buy a replacement climate control unit. The first option will require a fair bit of digging, calling electronics guys (and I suggest trying some high-end audio places in your city to see where they send gear for repair - its usually the best guys in town). And then it will probably cost $100/hour for the repair. Buying a second-hand climate control through trade-me or Carsten will probably work out a hell of a lot cheaper and easier.

Having the same symptoms with a couple of climate control modules, has anyone replaced the rotary encoder to fix this, and if so any details of the item used?

OE unit, approx 12.5x12.5mm, 25mm D shaft & 6mm dia, 30 detents, push button & approx 33mm total height, but resolution unkown.

Found this one on Mouser, is the closest I have come across so far.

Well I went ahead and installed the rotary encoder outlined above (PEC11L-4225F-S0015), everything was looking good, aligned with the board, and although a few mm shorter in height everything fitted and worked including the push button to auto.
Outputs of the rotary encoder are reversed though, ie anit-clockwise=increase temp & clockwise=decrease temp.
Will live with it for now, but will continue to try and find another encoder.

OEM unit is Panasonic and only numbers on it are '150221'. Google is not much help from this unfortunately.
