yep, been sucked into servicing my girlfriends, friends wrx,
ej20 turbo, 96ish??

what oil and how much?
and any particular oil filter that should/shouldnt be used?

and special tools needed?

yeah mate, best process for the Rex is the following:

Step 1: locate the oil sump
Step 2: Drain
Step 3: Drive car hard
Step 4: stand confused next to the smoking mess that was the EJ20
Step 5: claim the insurance
Step 6: BUY A LEGNUM!

Hope this helps mate

10W40 seems to be the most preferred from my experience on a stock EJ20. I'd stick with a decent brand. I used nothing but Motul, personal preference tho.

Alot of other rex owners use Mobil Synth S 10W40 (Semi Synthetic) and can be purchased for around $32 for 5 litres.

Oil filter can be challenging. Allow a decent amount of time for the service depending how much you are doing.

Oil Filter wrench will fit onto a 6" long 1/2" drive socket extension and a ratchet and twist off the filter easy as.

Ryco oil filter - there is two for rex's - a small one same as Subaru supplies and a bigger one which can be used for more oil capacity.

how much? 4 liters; but I would say 4.5 to compensate for the oil filter.

hope this helps.
