Key Cut querry

I rocked up at a Key Cut stand to cut my one key for my series 2 legnum.

I was told the key wouldnt start the car as it has an imobiliser attached to it?

I remember test driving a series 1 at the dealer with just a key.

Dont really wanna pay big bucks at a dealer unless i have to...

BS its just a central locking key.
normal keys are fine,
