AWD cars have chains fitted to the front wheels as already stated.
The way you put them on all depends on what chains you have.
The diamond pattern chains are the easiest and very rarely will they damage your tyres or rims. Unless if you drive too fast with them on or dont fit them properly.
In Australia though the need of removing ABS is limited. As when conditions are bad enough for you to lock up all the time, most roads are closed.
This is just my experience though.

Yea your right sam, what i was saying earlier was regarding to off road snow driving and my experience roads over here get cleared when there is snow and gritted so your pretty safe unless your in a blizzard!
