So I know this thread is rear diffs but I thought I would throw this question in
what is the option for front diffs?
Do evo 4-6 helical front diffs bolt in?
Or What's my best option?

4-6 helical diff LSD units bolt in to our transfer cases
4-6 entire transfer cases are interchangeable in our cars
7-9 helical diff LSD units require some machining of the front diff housing for the LSD unit to fit into it
7-9 entire transfer cases do not fit our cars, due to them being ACD and the tail shaft going high instead of low meaning it will foul on the subframe/K-frame

Same applies for all aftermarket units also, unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer.

@Kenneth has put both a ACD unit and a 7-9 LSD unit onto a 4-6 "low tail shaft" type transfer case. if you want details on the machining needed hes the man to ask.

After reading through this thread with the spectacular death of Loki's diff, it's great to see the options!

Thanks @Dice I realize that as a former moderator, I had hit 260% of my inbox so did a massive clean-out. Have sourced another AYC this morning for the meantime until I decide to go either the mechanical or S-AYC route :)

How complicated is it to install the RS diff into the Type V or STR open diff case? I've dropped this task off with my mechanic and he made some noises about lining up the crown to the diff and might need to take it to his gearbox guy.

Like many things in life, it depends.

If he is thorough and you want to get the best result, send it to a specialist who will check the bearings, contact pattern and preloads. Then get them to set it up quite tight (a bit higher preload will increase stability under torque at the expense of bearing life) and you are away laughing.

If you want it cheap, so long as he doesn't mix up the shims, bearings and races - you should be able to get away with taking out the diff, changing the crown wheel over to the LSD and putting it back in using the correct shims, bearings and races. (Bearings and races are a set - NEVER mix them up)

I would advise the former option as its cheaper in the long run than having the diff bust on you. That said, I did the latter and haven't had any trouble (though I did a lot of research first and checked the contact pattern was still OK etc afterwards)

Kenneth did you notice any ABS strangeness with your front LSD? Or do you not push it hard to know?

Btw, someone on Evo Oz is selling 5 brand new Evo RS diffs -- if anyone is interested. Looks like there's 3 left.

you cant use the evo diffs. as they have different mounts.
you only use the LSD unit itself and for that money you would be better off with a cusco/ralliart/ etc 2 way
