Legnum with twin GT25R upgrade.
I have used Mobil1 0w30, Elf Excellium 5w30 and Castrol Edge 5w30. I haven't tried any thicker oils but from the 3 that I've used, I think I prefer the Castrol stuff. It seems to run better and not break down as quickly.
+1 for the Castrol Edge 5w30. Works a treat ;) Penrite is ok too.

Bringing up an old thread, after research and reading the Legnums manual, its states to never use 5w30 in the VR4. Even in extreme cold weather. The recommended oil is 10w30. This is according to the original manual. Has anyone else come across this? I only see members using 5w30

This is from factory manual:

Really depends on your local climate.

Here is AU, these 3 oil weights would be valid, hence most use 5w-30. Its easier to get synthetics in 5w-30 from all the reputable brands.

10w-30 would probably be more appropriate as we don't get extreme cold.

In both cases, its only the cold weight thats different, both are 30 at 100°C.

This is what is translated in my Legnum book.

It's from the official manual that comes with the car. It was printed in 1996

Though 1996 synthetic oils where still quite new. I use only 5 - 30, otherwise it's lifter noise. Nulon or amsoil.

In the US synthetic oil has been popular since the 70s. I'm switching to 10w30 to test. I do get lifter noise after about 3000km using 5w30. I run Royal purple with a MD356000 filter.

There are variables at play here, engine condition, operating temperature and fuel types. Anything amsoil and the car was fine. Other brands all synthetic had to be 5 - 30.

rather interesting the owners manual states it, yet the workshop manual doesnt. 5w-30 and 10w-30 are identical viscosity at operating temp being multigrade. Only thing I can thing of is a difference in oil pressure when engine is cold.

Next oil change will put in 10w-30 and report in differences in regards to oil pressure at first start and operating temp.
Just gotta remember to log the thing!

I suspect most people here in AU wouldn't have the original owners manual. Part of the RAWS/SEVS scheme required the compliance workshop to provide a translated manual (that is just awful), so the original japanese manuals would have presumably got chucked away by the workshop.
