Steering sensor causing AYC fault

Hi guys,

just thought I'd post about this for anyone who has this issue in the future.

I've had an issue with my AYC since Tuesday night where it started lighting up all three bars when moving at low speed in straight line. My extreme powers of deduction told me that something was amiss so I disabled the AYC and plugged in my trusty EvoScan cable which flashed up error code 33 which is the steering sensor.

I've been reading into how to check the sensor by checking the voltage in the AYC ECU connector but the ECU is up in behind the dash and a real bitch to get at. I have noticed that you can hear a kind of rubbing noise when I turn the steering wheel so I'm pretty sure the fault code is accurate.

My second plan of attack was to remove the steering wheel and take a look at the sensor (following Glys instructions for safetly changing the wheel of course...). However the torx screws in each side as stuck fast and I eventually gave up. So now I'm waiting to hear from a local Evo specialist as to when they can take a look.

...to be continued...

So...

many weeks later, I got round to plugging a multimeter into the AYC ECU harness in an attempt to check the signal coming from the steering sensor. Unfortunately I couldn't find the signal anyware (I was going off instructions in the AYC service guide which said to measure voltage across pin 17 and an earth). However once I got to the plug (it's up in the passenger footwell) it didn't look like the diagram so maybe we have different pin-outs to an Evo?

Anyway, long story short, when I put everything back together (feeling a bit depressed that I couldn't find the fault) my AYC now works again! WTF!?

Maybe it was a loose connection at the ECU end all along...

cheers

Lee

p.s. it turns out the ECU I was looking at in my first post was the EFI ecu, AYC ecu is on the outside of the footwell, EFI ecu is in behind the middle of the dash.

that would be the main engine ecu, and for auto drivers the gearbox ecu is in the middle too.

Yeah that's what I meant by EFI. I can see why you need 'small child hands' (as someone on CVR4 put it) to get in there to wire up a piggy back ECU :D

Haha yea there's photos of the AYC ECU in my service guide.

Glad to hear its sorted itself out - hopefully for good this time!
