the gain setting is more relevant to the equipment and the situation, basically you dont want to be able to turn the volume up to the point where your speakers are being damaged
that said your amp shouldnt go into protect just because the gain has been set too high. use a multi meter to measure the impedance (ohms) of the speakers connected to the amp and the amount of power the amp is getting
if all else fails you may need to borrow an amp to wire in temporarily, this way you can determine if the problem is with your amp or somewhere else in the system
