So... driving the other night when steering goes hard and car stalls. Tryed starting it again but no go. Have a look next morning after getting her towed home and find power steering belt has snapped which alone wouldn't be an issue but car still won't fire up. Not real mechanically minded but can't see how just a belt would prevent starting? Sprayed some starting fluid into throttle body and got a bang but nothing else.... has anyone else come across this phenomenon at all. Car is a s1 leggy manual. Any help would be appreciated as not real cashed up at the mo (christmas) and most mechsnic are likely to be on hols anyway... cheers

It's a remote possibility but Make sure the crank angle sensor wire is still intact and wasn't taken out when the belt broke. It's the wire that comes out of the plastic timing cover near the front bank, close to where the power steer belt runs.
If that's cactus, you'll need a new one or some serious soldering to fix it.

have also seen drive belts brake off when shredded and get under and behind the lower timing case and balancer and wedge between the crank timing gear and belt… have had a caldina and a tj magna in at work in the last 6 weeks both where this has happened… this may be the "bang" or backfire you heard whilst trying to start due to the timing being out… just a possibility..
