Major Automatic Transmission Issue - Gearbox going into limp mode

Thanks Dawso and Dimi for your input / suggestions. I've been meaning to book my car in to Meek for a Service for a while now...*cough* too long perhaps.
I just took it for a spin after a long rest - it's selecting gears reasonably well, although it's definitely not as smooth as other auto VR-4's I've driven. Are these boxes really that touchy if they've got old oil in them? I might just get a major service and see how it goes...it's got nearly 90,000km on it now anyway, and it's long overdue for some love and attention.

sorry for bumping this thread 11 years later but was this problem ever solved?
