Mitsubishi F4A51 Automatic Transmission Hazard Problem

I am writing on behalf of the issue concerning the safety and reliability of Mitsubishi and Dodge vehicles and their owners that contain the Mitsubishi F4A51 Automatic Transmission (2000-2005 V6 Eclipse, 2001-2005 V6 Stratus RT, 1997-2003 V6 Galant)

So I see here it say 1997-2003....mine is a 1996..how do I find out if mine is at risk?

If you check down the bottom of that post it states that our box is actually a W4A51, which is esentially the same as these boxes so we are all at risk. This spec of Gearbox was used in all Automatic 8th Gen VR-4's

The Galant they are refering to above is the USDM Galant, not the JDM

I'm at risk now of losing the gearbox instead now as mine already disintergrated :(

You don't even HAVE a stock transmission cooler, so yes definitely!

What he said! Lol

It currently runs through your radiator for "cooling"

IMHO i think it'd be more likely to heat up your radiator than cool the trans fluid ;)

DEFINATELY do it...

Done and done !

So sorry to hear what you have had to go through with yours Dawso, i think you have in an unfortunate way saved a few members boxes by this happening. I for one am going to devote some extra attention to my trans. Good luck with the repairs mate.

Cheers Trevor, hopefully all goes well! :D

Good to hear you bought the cooler.

Its all a learning experience for Aussies so far. So like the saying goes, one mans loss is another mans gain... Hopefully some of this will benefit members in the future :)

Its worrying you had this catastrophic failure just 1 day after the cooler was installed. Are we convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the installation of the cooler did not somehow trigger this. For example maybe some crap in the new cooler got drawn back into the auto? or introduced some kind of hydraulic lock following the install of the cooler causing a problem? (Ie some procedural mistake in the install) Dunno, but Im quite nervous about putting my new cooler on now..

Kevin, can you mail me when you have had it done? Just keen to know what to expect it is going to cost me to have mine done.

Hey guys, don't fret....

It was COMPLETELY unrelated to the trans cooler.

Indications are that this piece in my box had broken many months ago, and in more than one place.

There is a post in the Automatic Transmission Thread and at the start of this thread explaining this problem with these boxes. It is a known issue by Mitsi, they just never recalled them to fix it (because it costs too much money as i found out lol....)

Well, you can add me to the list of people who have encountered this problem with their auto box :-( Driving home from work this afternoon, the dreaded flashing 'N' haunted my dash, like an unwanted fly buzzing around your lunch (luckily only about 10km from home, out of a 90km commute). First stop...ozvr4.com - next stop...crying... subsequent stops may include anger, and an auto trans specialist! Anyone recommend any good NSW shops, preferably close to...let's say...Penrith? Anything I should look out for being a fancy gearbox?

Its the same gearbox as a Verada optional 5-tip, only it has been setup for AWD. Auto trans specialists would be the way to go for repair.

Don't jump to conclusions though, read the Automatic Transmission Thread first. There is more than one reason for limp mode in these cars ;)

Adrian, I take my car to Meek Automotive (Leading Mitsubishi and VR-4,EVO Specialists) at Girraween. But they don't deal with auto boxes unfortunately. Only manuals. The next best place to deal with this will be Hills Motorsport in Castle Hill. Speak to Mark.
Jason from HPI takes his VR-4 to Mark. They're very good at Hills. Mark's a funny bastard too and fair priced.
If it needs a rebuild, you're looking at 2-2½ weeks off the road and around $2500.
It would still pay to call Meek Automotive as they are good friends with Hills Motorsport and they might be able to refer you and get it cheaper for you.
I've dealt with both and they're very good, fairly priced and they both have genuine interest in our cars and end up just talking to you all day long if you stick around.

Keep us updated man.
