Yeah i just got off the phone with a transmission specialist place and they told me what i described to them was nothing to do with oil but gearbox looked like it was playing up when i brought a second hand one. So that sucks .

Im getting it out all sorted tomorrow, worst case i have to get it reconditioned, i'll see what happens tomorrow.

Yea thanks Brad, am sticking to SPIII - just annoyed because alot of chasing up, trying to get parts and figuring out.

OK so I just changed my oil on my Legnum. I read this thread, looked at the size of the filter on the car currently (some "DRIFT performance" thing) and then went to Autobarn.

Imagine my surprise when I find that the Z56B and Z142A filters are really wide compared to the filter on the car. I query the database at Autobarn, it says use Z411. The Z411 looks the same size as the filter on the car, so that's what I buy and it fits perfectly.

I found the Mitsubishi part code - MD136466 - for the OEM filter and cross-referenced it at Ryco. THEY say use Z142A, so then I checked the Ryco info for the Z142A and the Z411. Here's the output:

Z142A and Z56B
Seam Diameter 87.00mm
Overall Height 80.00mm (Z142A) - 100.0mm (Z56B)
Seal Outside Diameter 66.00mm
Thread M20-x1.5-6H

Z411
Seam Diameter 69.50mm
Overall Height 86.00mm
Seal Outside Diameter 64.00mm
Thread M20-x1.5-6H

From the seal diameters and thread they're compatible if a bit larger on the Z142A/Z56B. The outside diameter of the Z142A and Z56B concerns me that they would allow dirt and liquids to get in past the metal lip of the filter and touch the rubber sealing ring. I would have thought this meant the filter seal could be at greater risk of degrading, depending on what chemicals got down there (degreaser, say).

Have a look at the pictures. You can see that the steel body of the Z142A filter extends beyond the rubber seal, whereas on the Z411 it does not. The mount for the filter on the engine is only as wide as the Z411 filter body.

z411 - perfect.jpg

Having said all THAT, it's worth noting the Z142A is 6mm shorter than the Z411. The Z56B is very long and I would be concerned it could get hit by road debris and ripped open. The filter is right at the bottom front of the car just behind the grille and not protected by any other engine components. Unlike, say, my Ford Falcon where the oil filter is way up high.

I've been running Z65B filters for the last 5 years on my car and just recently switched to a Z142A as I installed a sandwich plate and using the Z142A plus the sandwich plate gives me the same overall hight as a Z56B. I have not once hit my filter on anything and my car is quite low. I wouldn't be concerned about dirt/liquids collecting in the filter groove and degrading the seal unless you plan on leaving the filter on there for +20,000kms or plan on doing a lot of off road driving. Those seals are designed to be quite tough and hard wearing and a little water or degreaser is not going to harm in, if it did degreaser would deteriorate all the rubbers in your engine bay.

There is also the Z79a if you are concerned about the height and seam diameter.
I believe the Z79a and Z411 are the only Platinum filters ryco make too - assuming you care about the improved filtering efficiency.

"One thing that is no longer important is the ambient temperature. Older automotive owner manuals often recommended one oil for the summer and another for the winter. This is still necessary for air cooled engines but is no longer a consideration in pressurized water cooled engines"

That's way too thick.
That too. Even if you were planning some serious track time that's too heavy and not necessary. There is a lot of strong personal opinion when it comes to oil weight though.

Managed to consume most of the Amsoil Signature Series 0W30 when I used it, no such problem with any other oil I've tried.

Ps you should have a read of this entire thread. Oils have been discussed to death.

I did it but there is not to much about engine oils, but from this thread I think that the best will be 5W-40 but AmsOil dont have this spec in offer, only for European car and the question is that will be good for VR4, and I want really good oil ;)
