if you leave it in there forever it might cause problems. Using it as directed should be ok though

what lifter bleed trick? you guys on drugs or something? how can you bleed it?!? But please do tell..

btw.. I've done oil flushes and everything.. next service, i'll get the amsoil oil flush stuff see how it goes..

and btw.. I've got X3E's oil additive, but haven't tried it..

Christian, the trick reffered to is found in the English Manual 11 (6A1x section) which I have got the image of here:
LifterBleed.jpg

Interestingly, I translated the Japanese 6A13TT engine manual (same section) and the process is the same.... but funnies part is the first sentence:
Notes
And shortly after starting the engine while driving due to believe RASSHUAJASUTA

Bled the lifters on my car last night. Definately quietened them down a fair bit just sitting in the garage. Time will tell (with cold starts) whether it's a permenant fix....

oil use?

got a bit of a problem! Ive had mixed opinions on oil in these vr4's.

I was recommended to use a 20w50 or 60 semi from dealer (err wrong)

then from an evo specialist who didn't reckon these cars needed such a good oil so he recommended 10w40 full......still heaps of lifter noise

Ive got lifter noise bad with 10w40...

so I'm gonna drop 0w40 in it and see. the only brand i could lay my hands on was Castrol Edge.

Anyone had experience with this oil.

if there's no huge problem with this stuff, ill do it tonight and see what happens!

Steve is the lifter noise there ALL the time, or only at startup? If it's there all the time, try bleeding the lifters (as outlined above). I did this to my car as it began to be there all the time, and it has basically quietened them down completely now.

If they are only ticking on startup, then it is a sludge problem (more than likely) and you need to do an engine flush before adding any more oils. IF you have done the flush, then get some 0/30 Amsoil. I have tried a few different brands, and the only one that ever seems to get the nod here in Aus or NZ or UK is Amsoil. Its a little dearer but worth it (and the effort) I believe.

its really loud on cold start but then slowly dulls to a quieter one, once warm its on and off! i tried the bleeding, but while using the heavier oil, so im thinking it was useless!
I had to change the oil 500km after buying the car as it had engine flush in it.
so i will drop the 0w40 in it and hopefully its all good!

I'll agree with others, paying for good quality oil helps heaps. I've got lifter noise on cold statup for about the first 2-5 mins, depending on how long i let the car warm up at idle. I tried Castol Edge, 5W30, 10W30 and 0W40 and none of them made much of a difference, i also tried a 10W40. I used to think that all quality performance oils (high end castrol, mobil, penrite, etc) would be pretty much the same, and so didn't spend the extra ~$10 to get Mobil SuperSyn over the Castrol Edge until my car had its warranty service at MRT. They put in Mobil Supersyn 10W30 and the car was noticably better, with less lifter noise, than when running on the Castrol oil. So going by what alot of members say on here and CVR4, i'll be looking to get some Amsoil 0W30 for my next change.

OK, well after you've done the flush & oil change, make sure you bleed the lifters again after you've done about 200-300kms. As its there all the time it's quite likely there is still some air in there. It took about 25 cycles to get rid of my noise (+5 more for good measure) so I was sitting there for just over 15 minutes (@ ~30sec per cycle). Make sure you leave a full 15 sec between cycles as this is important. Dont just rev it up and down continuously.

I bled mine last week and it helped the startup ticking, but there is still one persistent little bugger in there that ticks continuously even when warm. I guess I'll try another couple dozen bleed cycles.

I did it parked on the street when I was waiting for my family one night... people walking by must have thought I was kinda strange lol

Just flushed and changed filter and dropped Castrol Edge 0w40 in.

Very pleased with the results on first startup after.... no noise...

then followed bleed procedure.

Very very happy with results of that, absolutely no noise what so ever!

went for a test drive, very impressed with way engine revved(a lot different to the way it used to)

Returned, carried out bleed procedure again for good measure.

NO NOISE! you little beauty!

The real test will be tomorrow morning!

Ill post tomorrow!

Cold start this morning: lifter noise for 25 seconds, then nothing.

after warmed up, light lifter noise - carried out bleed - 10 times - lifter noise no longer present.

I just hope i don't have to keep doing bleed to get rid of it!

None the less, it is miles better than what it was!

If your needing to re-bleed regularly is this possibly pointing towards a gasket issue and not the lifters themselves being a problem?

Those meek.com.au lifter sets are ~$214 for 16 that makes it $321 for a full set. A lot less than $500.

Anyone have one of those lifter removal tools lying around?

Umm, you don't have to bleed every day/cold start if its an air issue. Especially if it was done just after the engine is warm would indicates there is gunk in the lifters has shifted again.

If bleeding them "fixes" it each start I would suggest another engine flush to try remove the gunk - and if that doesnt work, then new lifters may be on the cards for you :(
